About Guru - Mayura Academy of Dance
Smt. Swapna Sridharan is the Founder and Artistic Director of Mayura Academy of Indian Dance, Breinigsville, PA. She has been teaching Bharatanatyam for the past 15 years. She is also an Adjunct Professor teaching Indian dance forms at the Department of Theatre, Lehigh University.
Swapna's initial training in Bharatanatyam started at the age of 4 (Thanjavur Style) under Guru Smt. Teresa David in Tuticorin. Later, she continued her training under Guru Smt. Beena who is an exponent in Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam from Kalamandalam, Kerala. Swapna was also trained in Mohiniattam along with Bharatanatyam under Smt. Beena. During her training, Swapna performed numerous times and went on to win various commendations. |

Ms. Swapna has a Bachelors in Computer Science and Masters in Information Technology. However her heart has always followed her passion for Bharatanatyam, which helped her accomplish her Master of Arts in Bharatanatyam at the University of Madras under the guidance of Kalaimamani Guru Smt. Dr. Lakshmi Ramaswamy. Later, she continued her training under Kalaimamani Madurai Shri R Muralidharan and has been under his wings until now. She is also currently being trained in Mohiniattam by Kalamandalam Dr. Sugandha Valli Bai.
Training in Classical Carnatic Music for 12 years, with Smt. Bavani Subramanian and later with Guru Shri Trichy Narayanan, helped Swapna achieve a deeper Sadhana for Bharatanatyam during her formative years.
In 2020 & 2021, Swapna and her students were a part of 2 successful Guinness World Book of Records events and also Asia & India Book of Records led by Kalaimamani Guru Madurai Shri R Muralidharan. Apart from this, Swapna's students were a part of 10 Successful World records under ICMDA (International Associations of Musicians and Dancers Association) in 2022.
Swapna Suresh began offering Bharatanatyam classes in 2008 in College Station, TX and has kept the tradition going upon relocating to PA in 2011. Mayura Academy of Dance has the privilege of training numerous students since the last 12 years. Her School of Dance has flourished into a source of joy and pride. Through this school and her work in the community, Swapna and the students of Mayura raise cultural awareness for this ancient beautiful art. To encourage her students, Swapna routinely hosts an annual program called "Natyanubhava," and her students have utilized their knowledge of classical dance to perform at various local events at Schools, Temples, Art Organizations and Universities.
Apart from teaching at Lehigh University, Swapna was also an Adjunct Professor at DeSales university and taught Bharatanatyam to students of diverse backgrounds. She has given several lectures and demonstrations at Penn State University, Muhlenberg College, and at high schools in Allentown School District.
Swapna's Mayura Dance Academy has now spread its artistic wings in Scranton and Chester Springs, PA.
